A microchip is a tiny glass capsule, about the size of a grain of rice, which is filled with electronic components giving a unique 15 digit number. Giving a pet a microchip is a relatively simple procedure.
It goes in under the skin between the shoulder blades with a needle, takes a few seconds, and needs no anaesthetic. Most animals react to it about as much as they react to a vaccination.
The chip itself does nothing except hold a number. What makes it useful is the registry: the number has to be linked to your current phone number, and it has to be updated when you move or change your number. A chip registered to a phone that no longer works is the most common reason a found animal does not get home.

Common questions
Does it hurt?
It is a needle, so there is a moment of it, about the same as a vaccination. No anaesthetic is needed and the animal is normally back to itself immediately.
Is it a GPS tracker?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. It holds a number and nothing else. It cannot tell you where the animal is; it tells whoever finds the animal who to call.
What if I change my phone number?
Tell us and we update the registration. A chip pointing at a dead number is the usual reason a found animal never makes it home.
